In 'Unseeing', Anna and Joseph were trapped in an unhappy marriage - Anna had sacrificed her religious pursuit and even though she tried to improve the situation by being a dutiful wife, she remained childless; Joseph had always wanted a loving wife whom he can have children with but had married an unwillingly and barren woman instead.
At the end of the story, we learned that Joseph's apology to Anna during his illness was not for something that she had thought it was for; rather, it was because he had another family. It was until the last day of his funeral that his eyes finally closed after his 'mistress' had visited him with their children.
We know that he had been waiting for her to appear.Why do you think that Joseph could finally close his eyes and rest in peace (or maybe not! we wouldn't know for sure)?
Just a few possible speculations:- peace: he finally saw his beloved 'family'- a relief: he knew that Anna now knows that truth and would not hold it against him because he is dead- a revenge: he had always felt angry and unloved by Anna so he wanted to spite her by showing her that he had found someone better than her- forgiveness: telling Anna indirectly that he has never blamed her for not loving him wholeheartedly and being barren- a favour: to show Anna that she is released from the marriage chains and that she can continue her religous pursuits.
There are many more possibilities if you think hard enough. Surprise me!

Perhaps before he died , he wanted to leave his other 'family' so he can love Anna whole-heartedly. Then , his other 'family' blames him and he thinks that they hate him and is angry with him. When he dies , he had his eyes open maybe because he thought his other 'family' was angry with him. And when his other 'family' came to his funeral to pay him respect , he then found out that they still love him but not hate.
Second possibility is that before Joseph died , he and his 'mistress' might have some conflict between each other. And he might think that his 'mistress' is angry with him so he did not die in peace .

There are a few possiblities, the first one is, maybe it was because he 'felt' that his real family had arrived and could finally rest in peace after seeing them well and still loving.
The second reason is maybe he 'saw' his real lawful wife, that was Anna, not bursting out in anger or doing any harmful things to his mistress or children.
The third reason is that maybe Joseph wanted to see that his real family to send him off in order to rest in peace.
The fourth and finally reason is that maybe he wanted to agitate Anna to take 'revenge' on her for not loving him or baring him any children.

Maybe Joeseph's eyes were opened at first because he knew that he had some 'uncompleted missions' to do.first is that he has to make his wife forgive him(because he does not even know if his wife has forgave him or not),secondly,he would want to know how the wife would react when she see his mistress.

i think that joseph could finally close his eyes and rest in peace because he want to apologize to Anna for having another family.
By not closing his eyes he is trying to tell or show Anna about his other family as he could not talk because he is dead.
he is also trying to show Anna that she can comtinue her religious pursuits and she is also released from the marriage.

I think that when Joseph finally closed,he must have been happy when he saw his 'mistress'.
When he was still married with Anna,they do not have any child.Therefore,he went out to search someone that can bear childrens.So,when his other family came to his funeral,he must have been glad because he wanted to show that he had made a bad choice marrying Anna for she could not bear a child and she does not even love him because she is busy with her charity work.

I think that Joseph's eyes were finally closed because he felt really glad after seeing his 'mistress'as well as his another 'family'.
Knowing that Anna had found out the truth about him having another 'family' without Anna's knowledge at his funeral, he would definitly felt relieved as Anna had found out the truth what has been hidden all his living life.
Being a mother without a child is so miserable as people would think negatively and would say bad things about their marriage.

Maybe he was waiting for the arrival of his other 'family' to see them befoire he go away for good . To find peace for both his families . Therefore , he wanted to find peace for his two families and for himself by revealing the truth that he has been having a mistress and for them to move on without grudges as he had already died by then .
It could be that he has forgiven her by telling her indirectly that she do not need to regret being as barren because she has three step-sons which also is related to her husband . And that she could continue her church duties witout any worries . Therefore , he had forgiven her before leaving the world for good .

Before Joseph died , he might had wanted his 'mistress' to bear him the first child . And when he found out that his 'mistress' was bearing his second child , he wanted her to abort it . Maybe the 'mistress' was against the idea and chased Joseph out and wanted to have nothing to do with him . So , Joseph might think that his 'mistress' really hated him alot . During his funeral , when his 'mistress' came to pay him respect with their 2 children , he knows that they had forgiven him and he finally closed his eyes .
Second possiblility was that he may have wanted to leave his 'mistress' and go back to loving Anna . But he was afraid that his 'mistress' might find trouble with Anna and so he was trying to balance the two families . The thought of wanting to confess to Anna that he had another family might had crossed his mind but he was not able to do so . He might have guilt in him when he died and could not rest in peace even when Anna told him that she had forgiven him but he wanted Anna to know the truth of why he could not rest in peace . When his other 'family' came to pay him respects , Anna found out the truth and in her heart , had forgiven him truly . Joseph might had known and decided to rest in peace .

He might have wanted to see his second family for a last time before he could rest in peace.It could also be that he wanted to see Anna's reaction to his second family; whether she would pretend that she did not know them, or try and hurt them.
Perhaps after seeing that Anna would not do any harm to his wife and children, he finally could rest in peace.
Maybe he wanted revenge as he wanted a perfect family eg. a loving wife and loving children.But instead, what he got was a wife who could not bear him children and had some sort of 'attitude problem'.Even after advising her to see a doctor, she stubbornly refused.He was desperate, and so went outside looking for someone who can bear him children to fufill his "desires".
